The waning moon hangs
Low over the horizon...
A horn'd diadem.

I'm not entirely sure about this one. The image certainly captures how the moon looked at 4:30 this morning; but the reference is somewhat obscure...that is, of you're not into mythology. It helps to have a knowledge of the crown of Hathor.

So while I think that the image is correct, I think that this haiku fails in its effort to capture the moment fully, because to convey the full impression the reader must have at least a glancing familiarity with Egyptian mythology. Hmm...must ponder the use of mythological references in haiku.

Of course, I may very well choose to believe that it all comes back to the failure of our school system. :-) And that they should give us a better mythological grounding--which would make the reading of Shakespeare, Milton, Donne and all the others oh so much richer... But I guess that would all cost money and not be cost-effective.

Or I may just be feeling ornery today, I can't quite decide.
