So, we actually got a fairly heavy snowfall today. Sadly, most of it came this morning, which meant that there was very little plowing BEFORE rush hour. All winter, when there's been a couple of flakes in the sky, I see MILLIONS of plows, this morning, I didn't see any out on the streets until I got almost all the way to work. WTF?
You see, when I first got up, there was just a trace amount of snow, but it started falling around 3:30 or so. So I went in to work. And for a while, none of the schools were cancelling. And while most of our schools ended up cancelling, Minneapolis didn't and ran two hours late --at least in theory. That created a HUGE fucking mess. Buses were getting stuck everywhere, and I couldn't get tow trucks out to them, because the trucks were overwhelmed by all the other vehicles stuck (incoluding MUNI buses, other school buses and semis). In most cases, the bus drivers managed to free their buses with the help of other motorists...not through the help of the trucks. I also didn't have enough people to cover all the severely late tiers that were running. We were still trying to get people in to school at NOON. Mind you, the first schools get out at 1:40. I don't think the kids got much education today. Minneapolis should have closed down. Really they should.
I left work at 12:30 and took surface roads home. Luckily I know how to drive in the snow. I only skidded twice, but a trip that's normally 20 min took about an hour...and this is AFTER they had ostensibly been plowing.
I get home to discover that there's no power. The power is out on my whole block...potentially my whole neighborhood. No power, no heat. I was not a happy camper. The power finally came back just about 5pm.
So I was able to crank the heat WAY up to try to warm the place up and eat a hot dinner. I'm going to be early tonight.
