I decided recently that I wanted to learn to play the mountain dulcimer. I bought a dulcimer, it arrived this week. I tried it out today. After about 2 hours, I've managed to tune it (luckily the bass is tuned to D and the other three strings are all A) and can play the do-re-mi and part of Frere Jacques...not the hard part, mind you, but the "Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques/Dormez vous? Dormez vous?" part. It's a four string dulcimer, and the melody strings are so close together, I keep twanging the wrong damn one. Which is frustrating in the extreme.
Given that I've had no music lessons for about 30-ish years, that's not horrible, I guess. But I hate the part where I can't figure stuff out because it's all new to me.
But I still want to learn to play the dulcimer, so I'm going to keep trying.
