You know, I've been working on incorporating exercise into my life, as part of an overall attempt to improve my health/fitness levels. And it's been helpful. But yesterday I started thinking about how my work and recreation interests are really far more sedentary than not: jewelry making, stained glass, reading, computer stuff, movies, etc. So the whole exercise for half an hour (or even an hour, which it often ends up being) for six days a week is really just a drop in the bucket against the larger picture. On the other hand, I LIKE my interests (duh). :)
I haven't figured out how to address this issue as such, but I decided to (a) acknowledge that is IS an issue, and (b) try one small thing. I have a balance ball. I decided to swap it out for my computer chair at home for at least part of each day. Just sitting in the chair at my desk was causing my spine to compress and my hamstrings to shorten. And the ball requires active balancing, which (in theory at least) involves the core abdominal muscles. But also, if I play my music while on the computer, I find myself bouncing and dancing ON THE BALL while typing...and I have LOTS of bouncy-type tunes (Tom Jones, Sixteen Tons; The Muppets, The Rhyming Song; 3 or four versions of The Banana Boat Song; Rockapella; etc.) So I'm getting some more movement in there as well. :-)
