Today was one of my quasi-regular road trips to Lake Itasca, up near White Earth in Northern Minnesota. For those who don't know, Lake Itasca is the headwaters of the Mississippi. At the point where the lake spills over a small rock dam (built in the 1930s -- moving the actual headwaters a couple hundred yards northwards), the Mississippi is only about 6 feet or so across.

Even though spring is here--it snowed today. Not much more than a dusting, but still. Up at Itasca, there's still a pretty significant ice crust on the lake. The area just around the headwaters isn't frozen. The water itself, however, is FYAO cold. There was a flock of Canadian geese, a couple of ducks, and a flock of Trumpeter Swans on the lake. They were all migrating north for the summer. :-0 One pair of swans had separated themselves from the rest of the flock -- and remained even after all the other swans took off. So, as you might suspect, I wrote a haiku.

Swans at Itasca
Brief rest during migration—
A chance to pair-bond.

But on the bright side, the pussywillows had just bloomed. We snipped a couple of branches. So spring is really coming.

It was a long damn drive, but I love going up there. We also stopped at Crow River on the way back. That was also so worth it.
